Reflexive verb building, rules

Reflexive verbs

Coniuno uses the rules listed here to build reflexive verbs.

  1. Reflexive verbs are always built with ter!
  2. Coniuno recognises reflexive verbs from the syntax: verb + se, e.g. lavarse
  3. Generally spoken the following building scheme is valid for all reflexive verbs:

  • Indicativo, Presente
  • Indicativo, Pretérito Imperfeito
  • Indicativo, Pretérito Perfeito
  • Indicativo, Pretérito Mais-Que-Perfeito
  • Imperativo

            Singular I [verb] + me
            Singular II [verb] + te
            Singular III [verb] + se
            Plural I [verb] + nos (*1)
            Plural II [verb] + vos
            Plural III [verb] + se

    (*1) the verb’s appended "s" is omitted

The reflexive forms are built by combining the conjugated verb with the self pronoun.

Example: Indicativo, Presente, Singular I of "lavarse" = lavo-me

  • Indicativo, Pretérito Perfeito Composto
  • Indicativo, Pretérito Mais-Que-Perfeito Composto

Singular I [ter] + me + Particípio Passado (verb)
Singular II [ter] + te + Particípio Passado (verb)
Singular III [ter] + se + Particípio Passado (verb)
Plural I [ter] + nos + Particípio Passado (verb) (*1)
Plural II [ter] + vos + Particípio Passado (verb)
Plural III [ter] + se + Particípio Passado (verb)

(*1) the appending "s" of temos / tínhamos (ter) is omitted

The reflexive forms are built by combining the conjugated auxiliary verb "ter" with the self pronoun and the verb’s Particípio Passado.

Example: Indicativo, Pretérito Perfeito Composto, Singular I of "lavarse" = tenho-me-lavado

  • Indicativo, Futuro Simples
  • Condicional, Simples

            Singular I Infinitiv (verb) + me + ei/ia

Singular III Infinitiv (verb) + se + á/ia
            Plural I Infinitiv (verb) + nos + emos/íamos
Plural II Infinitiv (verb) + vos + eis/íeis
Plural III Infinitiv (verb) + se + ão/iam

The reflexive forms are built by combining the verb in its infinitive-form with the self pronoun and the verb’s conjugation-extension.

Example 1: Indicativo, Futuro Simples, Singular I of "lavarse" = lavar-me-ei
Example 2: Condicional, Simples, Singular I of "lavarse" = lavar-me-ia
